Piano Tuning

The key to maintaining the tuning on your piano is consistency and humidity.

Most pianos are tuned once or twice a year. In some cases, such as concert venues, the piano may be tuned once or twice before each performance. If it has been a few years since the piano was last tuned, plan to arrange for a longer first appointment to allow for multiple tuning passes.

A stable tuning requires a stable humidity. Aim to keep the environment at 45% RH, but with the understanding that even the best kept space will change with the seasons, temperatures, and weather.

Voicing

Keep your piano sounding new with regular voicing.

Your piano left the showroom having been thoroughly voiced to make the piano sound rich and full. As the piano is played, the hammers become worn and the felt compacted. Carding the hammers to maintain their egg-shape, fitting the hammers to the strings, and needling the felt to soften the fibres will keep your piano sounding like it did new.

Regulation

Adjusting the action will profoundly affect how the keys feel when depressed.

There are over 8 adjustment points for every key. Combined, that is over 700 points to customize how the piano reacts to your touch. Changes to the piano’s environment and playing will impact how the keys feel and the piano responds. Regulation not only restores and improves how the piano feels, but can also improve the tone.
